SSEN Pillows: Serenity in the Process
More than ever in our hyperconnected, 24/7 world, it feels necessary to find moments of stillness and places of refuse. For textile artist Mariska Driessen, that calm oasis is her Brooklyn weaving studio. There, she can block out the relentless riot of the city and channel her creativity into crafting the ideas that become SSEN pillows. Available now from Edtoba.
Each pillow is handwoven on a loom with natural, sustainable materials and ethical labor practices. The art of weaving is one of physical discipline and focused repetitions interacting with materials: casting yarn into skeins on the kinetic wheel; dissolving natural dyes like indigo, turmeric, cochineal, and madder root; watching the dye drops coming off the skeins. For Driessen, the process is meditative; for anyone lucky enough to witness it, it is hypnotic.
The calmness Driessen accesses while weaving is evident in the product she creates. The muted colors and geometric patterns suggest tranquility and order, while the soft fullness of the finished materials invites restful reflection. The inspiration comes from the natural beauty of the oceans, mountains, and forests that Driessen has surfed, hiked, and danced through, which she absorbs in the moment and then uses as fuel for her creative process.
And that process is indivisible from the final product. From creating the dyes to assembling the pillows, every step is hand done. Removing the machine from the process allows the vision to unfold as each pass of yarn is made at the loom, as Driessen puts it. It gives her more control, allowing her to accomplish the subtle, singular fades and overdye that SSEN products have become known for. Each pillow has its own story to tell; no two are exactly alike.
That attention to craft and SSEN’s ethical sourcing make them a natural partner for Edtoba. Driessen shares our commitment to natural beauty, sustainability, and minimalism. The serenity of her process is evident in the final product. Now you, too, can take the time to slow down.
