The Eddy: A Plate for a Lifetime

The Eddy Plate started with a question: how can we create an everyday plate that cultivates stillness and will stand the test of time? The makers at the Haand ceramic studio in Burlington, North Carolina, embraced the challenge, utilizing a simple, traditional pottery-manufacturing process that dates to the 18th century. The result? A highly functional, uncomplicated piece that holds up to the rigors of everyday use, and also makes a statement. Available in three sizes and four colors.

Each plate is the result of patient labor and attention to detail, and sustainability is emphasized at every step. Starting from a handcrafted mold and ending in an energy-efficient kiln, the deliberate seven-step production process allows the studio’s makers to exercise control over the aspects they want to influence and pull back when they want to let chance work its magic. Sunlight and rainwater inscribe an indelible trace of the local environment on each Eddy plate, and leftover clay scraps are reused to minimize waste.

The goal, as with every Edtoba product, is to have a positive impact on the environment and the surrounding community. Quality and durability are an underrated part of sustainability; a plate you don’t need to replace is one fewer that has to be manufactured. Buying an object that will last a lifetime is always a more sustainable choice than buying a multitude of disposable objects throughout your life.

And the Eddy is an object you’ll want to spend a lifetime with. The plate aesthetically exemplifies its organic method of creation: clean, elegant lines derived from natural materials and finished in classic, organic colors. The design was influenced by natural phenomena, resulting in a rustic vernacular object that happens to be strikingly contemporary. It is equally well-suited to be the serveware for your next dinner party, a quiet breakfast, and the subject of your next Instagram post. The Eddy Plate will be first available at The Interior, a thoughtfully curated home design store in East Hampton, New York, that shares our values of serenity, beauty, and minimalism.
